Position Summary:
The Public Grants Manager is responsible for the execution of a public grants program to support the Trust for Public Land’s (TPL’s) Government Relations team and state and area offices, with a focus on support for park, schoolyard, and trails projects. This includes: researching public grant programs with an emphasis on state-level recreation and land management, energy and environment, transportation, housing, health, economic and community development, education, and arts agencies; disseminating information and providing grant guidance and technical assistance to staff, community partners, tribal partners, and/or local government agencies; assessing TPL projects for program eligibility and potential; managing and supporting the preparation, drafting, and submission of TPL project grant proposals; and assisting in post-award coordination.
The Public Grants Manager will work on state grant proposals where TPL has a local office, which may include: Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Massachusetts, Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, and Washington. The level of support provided to each state and for each grant application will be prioritized based on the Public Grant Manager’s capacity.
The Public Grants Manager will work closely with Government Relations, Finance, Legal, and Field Programs staff. This is a new position that will report to the Director of Federal Grants and Partnerships.

We offer competitive salaries commensurate with experience; the anticipated hiring range for this position is $72,301 to $77,301 per year.

Essential Functions:
Grant Management and Technical Assistance (70%)
- Assess TPL’s state-level public grant funding needs, determine project eligibility, identify potential for state-level public funding programs, and help secure grant funding.
- Coordinate with Field Programs, Finance, Legal, and other staff to prepare state funding applications, including researching, writing and/or editing proposal content, managing the proposal development process, and finalizing and submitting application packages.
- Monitor state grant proposals following submission; gather and provide additional information as needed, and work with TPL’s Legal, Finance, and Field Programs teams, applicants, and funding agencies to accept and manage awards.
- Support required grant progress and financial reporting, in partnership with Legal, Finance, and Field Programs staff.
- In partnership with Field Programs staff, develop state grant strategies to align Field project pipelines with plans to apply for relevant state funding opportunities.
- Build and maintain positive working relationships internally with staff across departments and nationwide.
- Partner with Government Relations and Field Programs staff to develop, maintain, and/or support close relationships with state agency program staff and administrators, as well as nonprofit, tribal, and local government partners.
- Work with Government Relations and Field Programs staff to inform public agencies and elected officials regarding state funding programs and guidelines.
- Maintain up-to-date, internal State Grant Database of state grant information, including a calendar of grant deadlines and a summary of grant program requirements.
- Research new grant program initiatives.
- Organize and conduct workshops and training courses.
- Represent TPL in presentations, webinars and conferences related to public funding expertise.
- Travel periodically to TPL field offices and conferences.
- Additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- 3-5 years of experience in public grant writing and management, nonprofit management, and/or public policy preferred
- Strong commitment to TPL’s shared values (Belonging, Creativity, Collaboration, Impact, and Hope) to effectively work across the organization.
- Outstanding written and oral communications skills
- Solid project and time management skills, with a strong attention to detail
- Ability to work independently and collaborate effectively and professionally with internal and external teams
- Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
- Ability to use good judgment, take initiative, and make recommendations to solve problems
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to build and maintain relationships with both internal and external stakeholders, including staff, local and state government, tribal government, nonprofit, and elected officials
- Technologically savvy: proficient with Microsoft systems, grant portals, and databases, with the ability to learn new methods and tools
