POSITIONSUMMARY TheNorthern California Interior ProjectManageris a key positionfordeliveringTPL’smissionofconserving land forpeopleby utilizing well-establishednonprofit land acquisition techniquesand sound businesspractices,inorderto advancelandscape-scaleconservationin northern California. The geographic region of focus includes the Sierra Nevada, southern Cascades, Central Valley and far northern California. TPL’sconservationprioritiesinthisregionincludeworking with communitypartnerstoprotectclimate-resilientlandsandwatersthatsupport wildlife habitat,recreationalaccess,working(forest,ranch)lands,waterresources,andhistoricalandIndigenouscultural values, aswellasotheropenspaceand environmentally importantlands.Successfuldevelopmentandimplementationofstrategicpriorities,includingcompletionofrealestatetransactions,thatadvancethese goals forTPL.ThispositionwillbelocatedintheSacramento region or Sierra Nevada unless otherwiseapproved.
Developstrust-basedrelationships with conservationpartnersrepresenting a diversity ofinterestsincludinglocalandregional land trusts,Indigenous,rural,agriculturalandworkingforestscommunity members, public andprivatefunders, public and privateproperty owners,andphilanthropists.
In consultation with TPL’s leadership and key partners, identifies areasinwhichTPL’sprotection strategy isneededforthepreservationofopenspacelandsofcriticallocal,regional,ornationalimportance;developsandmaintains a portfolioofpotentialprojects;respondsto inquiries by individuals, groups,etc.
Explorespotentialprojects bycontacting landowners,nonprofitorganizationsand public agency officials.
Maintainscurrentawarenessof land conservationtechniques,opportunitiesand issues byreadingperiodicalsandotherrelateddocuments,attending public forumsandidentifyingandparticipatingintraining opportunities.
Leading LandProtectionEfforts:
With teamsupport, holds the lead responsibilityfor identifying, negotiating,documentingandclosingrealestatetransactionsincoordination with legal, finance and other staff.
Identifies andadvanceslandscape-scaleconservationopportunitiesandprioritieswithin the northern interior region of California.
With teamsupport,takes a leadership roleinsecuringinterimfinancingandpermanentfundingfor land acquisitionsthrough existing ornew public andprivatefunding sources.
Responsibleforprojectmanagementincludingresearchingandexecuting all phasesofprojectsfrom initial outreachandlandownernegotiationthroughcoordination with attorneysand supervision ofappraisers,surveyors,andotherconsultants;conductingnecessarydue-diligencefortransactions; managing projectbudgetsand timelines; andseeking internalTPLapprovals.
Supportingandadvancing policies insupportof land conservation,climate resilience, and public access,including fortribalandhistorically underservedcommunities.
Public RelationsandFundraising:
In partnership with TPLphilanthropystaff,seeksphilanthropicsupportofTPL’stransactionsandbroaderconservationwork,andinconcert with otherTPL staff, supportsTPL’sfundraisinginthe public andprivatesectors.
Assists inoverall public relationsbypresentingTPL’sworkto public agencies,conservationorganizations,politicians,philanthropistsandthepublic asopportunities arise. ResponsibleforensuringTPLconservationprojectsarestructured to receivefavorablepresscoverageandsustainand advance key partnerships.
Writesorassists with competitivegrantapplicationsandbudgetsforproject funding.
Team Engagement:
Participatesas a valued contributor instaff meetings, strategicplanningsessions,budgetpreparation,developmentandfundraising effortsandproject strategy discussions.
Builds public awarenessandunderstandingofTPLthroughoutreachevents,occasional public speakingengagements,fundraising effortsandcreating a public presenceforTPLinthecommunity.

COMPENSATION As a full-time exemptemployee,youwillbeeligibleforTPL’scomprehensivebenefitsprogram,whichincludes medical, dental,and vision insurance,three weeks ofvacation annually plus sickdays, a personalday,day ofserviceandten + holidays,and a 403(b)retirementplan,currently with anupto7%company match. We anticipatethe hiring rangeforthispositionwillbe $85,000-95,000annually.Theofferwillbecommensurate with experience.
