Park and Alley Community Organizer - Los Angeles

The community organizer will independently implement and assist program staff with a variety of community engagement activities necessary for park and green alley projects across the Trust for Public Land’s Los Angeles program. The community organizer will be responsible for overseeing and implementing a broad range of outreach, empowerment and stewardship activities during both project implementation and after project completion. The community organizer will work to form advisory groups, steering committees, or similar, during the course of project development to create an engaged community responsible for overseeing stewardship programs and events at each site post project implementation. The community organizer will also work to establish advisory groups, steering committees, or similar, in our existing portfolio of completed parks and green alley projects where none currently exists and oversee and enrich the activities of community groups already established by the Los Angeles program.
 
Status: Part-Time (81%), Non-exempt

Responsibilities or Lists of Tasks:
1. Community Outreach and Organizing
  • Identify and engage with community organizations and stakeholders in the neighborhoods adjacent to current and completed parks and alley projects
  • Develop outreach and educational materials in conjunction with project staff
  • Implement organizing activities including door-to-door outreach, tabling at events, attending and presenting/speaking at community meetings, etc.
  • Strengthen existing park stewardship groups and create new groups via door-to-door and sidewalk engagement strategies
  • Work directly with community members to strengthen their connection with their neighbors and elected officials and to foster community empowerment
 
2. Workshop Preparations and Facilitation
  • Organize workshop logistics including identifying meeting locations, securing refreshments and material preparation in conjunction with project staff
  • Conduct phone calls to alert community members to upcoming meetings
  • Facilitate community meetings (stewardship meetings for existing parks and community group meetings at future project sites)
  • Provide Spanish translation for outreach materials and at community meetings and events
  • Complete mailings of flyers for upcoming meetings
  • Help put together and gather materials for future meetings
3. Community Feedback Documentation
  • Work with project staff to help collate and compile community feedback and design priorities.
  • Collaborate with project staff to document meetings and events for proposals and reports
  • Assist project staff with any other documentation related to outreach activities
 
This position requires working ‘off-hours’ including some weekend and evening meetings and events as well. The position is based out of our Pasadena office but should be prepared to be out in the field at various park projects (East Hollywood, Watts, Echo Park, South Los Angeles, Maywood, etc.). Access to reliable transportation is required.
 
Desired Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated ability to build trust among community members and to motivate and provide support in creating a space for community residents to actively engage in change making activities in their community.
  • 2 years of community organizing or related experience.
  • MUST be fluent in written and verbal Spanish and English.
  • Well-organized and detail-oriented.
  • Good writing and communication skills.
  • Comfortable working independently and as part of a team.
  • Willingness to work evenings and weekends when necessary.
  • Must be able to work independently out in the field and be comfortable engaging diverse community members in order to ensure successful park projects.
