Intern- Community Engagement & Coordination: Park Quality & Amenities in Dallas

The Trust for Public Land is a national non-profit organization that creates parks and protects land for people, ensuring healthy, livable communities for generations to come. Our North Texas office is on a mission to ensure that every resident of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan has access to a park, trail, or green space within a ten-minute walk of where they live.

As a part of this program, the Trust for Public Land also seeking to better understand park quality and amenities in the Dallas area. Through the spring and summer of 2018, we will be using mobile-app based technology to gather data about park amenities and quality. The data collected will be incorporated into a new GIS database being built by the organization. Volunteer assistance with these data-collection efforts is essential to its success.

We are seeking an intern to assist the Parks for People Program Manager with the implementation of this project. Primary responsibilities will include volunteer organization, community engagement, and surveying park amenities at local Dallas parks. The intern will work with their manager to develop a community engagement plan, organize local groups and volunteers, survey for amenities, and report findings to stakeholders, including senior staff at Dallas Park and Recreation Department.

This unique internship offers the opportunity to:

Reporting to the Parks for People Program Manager, this internship’s goals and responsibilities will include:
  • Visit each park selected by TPL and document amenities present (benches, lighting, athletic facilities, play equipment, etc)
  • Organize volunteers and neighborhood participants to collect amenity data for selected parks
  • Research and develop relationships with other organizations and residents near selected parks
  • Help coordinate events and participate in neighborhood events
  • Organize and manage volunteer groups for events in each community
  • Currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree program
  • Strong leadership skills with previous experience organizing and motivating volunteers
  • Strong interpersonal skills, able to effectively communicate with diverse audiences
  • Ability to self-motivate and work productively without supervision
  • Ability to speak to large groups, with written and verbal presentation skills
  • Basic computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Experience in GIS, app development, and/or database management preferred
Time Commitment: 20 hours per week from April 2, 2018 through August 17, 2018. Start and end dates are flexible, and additional time off may be negotiated.

Pay: $15 / hour
